Abstract

Onion (Allium cepa L.) are one of the most widely grown and consumed crops worldwide. This plant is known to contain various chemical components such as flavonoids, phytosterols and saponins. Quercetin, the main polyphenol of the flavonoid class, has great biological potential for the treatment of hypertension. The aim of this review is to analyze the potential for quertin to lower blood pressure in hypertensive patients as well as the bioactive components and mechanisms involved in this process. This review is a literature study. Based on the results of the review, it shows that quercetin supplementation has a significant effect on reducing blood pressure by taking into account the factors that affect this compound. Therefore, quercetin can be considered as an adjunct to antihypertensive therapy as well as herbal-based preventive therapy.
